I've been advised by my sons nursery that I need an EHCP plan for when it comes to applying for schools they have recommended a local sen school as they don't think he will be cope in mainstream school but you need an EHCP to be able to apply. They said they would apply for me but this was months ago and nothing been done so I've applied myself online. The LA has responded and asked me to fill out more questions and send evidence from any input he has already had. He hasnt had that much really. He's done the GDA and we are awaiting diagnosis. He has input from SALT and the local schools and families team. But that's it, will this be enough? What kinds of things to I need to put on this form. I'm worrying and I struggle to put into words everything that he struggles with, there's so much that I just forget to add things. He also recently qualified for DLA based on his care needs and behaviours. He's 3 and non verbal. I don't know what I'm doing, any help appreciated as I know they can turn me down for assessment and I really don't want that.

The first threshold to focus on is that of the EHCNA. It is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need special educational provision to be made via an EHCP.

You have enough evidence to demonstrate that. You could also make a SAR to the nursery to get evidence from them. The LA should approach the nursery but don’t rely on any/all relevant information being passed on.

For the form, think about things such as what DS likes/dislikes/what makes him happy, what is important to DS/you and what is important for DS, things that are working well/not so well, strengths/weaknesses, how DS communicates/how others communicate with him, what he wants to do in the future/aspirations, a bit about family/any other important people in DS’s life, important history.
