EHCP - named mainstream

My son has an EHCP and is currently in year 2 at a lovely local primary school. We have started to think about high school recently even though it is a few years away. Our local mainstream high school is not very good and has a bad reputation for bullying. DS has autism so we are very worried about him being a target if he goes to this school. I’ve read online that schools can be named on the EHC and the LA will ask parents for their preference. My question is, can the LA refuse the preferred school and only offer a place at the local school if they believe the local school can meet the child’s needs?

Yes, they can. Equally, if both schools are mainstream, the LA has no reason to want to do so.

If you don't get more answers, it may be worth reposting this to the SEN board, as there's a wealth of knowledge there.
