Confused by diagnosis

Hi I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

referred to Paeds by health visitor for 3 years 9 month old daughter. SEN profile, ADHD profile.

saw the consultant in December - prescribed melatonin for disordered sleep (maximum 3 hours per night)

cannot start ADHD pathway due to age but would support this at a later date - stated ‘witness early markers for an ADHD type presentation’

diagnosis given

  • disordered sleep
  • developmental difference of impulse and sensory regulation

what does that even mean in none medical jargon?
what areas does this cover or meet the criteria for extra support?

thank you.

One tired mumma

Disordered sleep means DD’s sleep doesn’t follow the typical pattern. For example, she may have difficulties falling asleep &/or staying asleep.

Developmental difference of impulse and sensory regulation means DD’s development in relation to impulsivity and sensory input differs from what you would expect of a typical DC of the same age. For example, she may respond differently to noise compared to other DC her age. Or she may do things without thinking to a greater extent than what you would typically see in other DC her age.

Most support is based on needs rather than diagnosis.

Does DD attend nursery? Are they providing support? Has anyone mentioned an EHCP?

Have you looked at DLA?

Thank you for your response. This sounds like a perfect profile match for her.

she does currently attend nursery yes. No support as ‘no needs identified’ ??? Mind boggling. Whether she is masking or they’re just oblivious I don’t know. They just seem to giggle when I mention concerns and usually respond with ‘aww they’re all like that’ - My previous two children have not displayed these traits or differences so it’s hard to believe that all children are like this. I just feel they’re not interested and just want to get the job done and go home.

apologies for the rant, struggling on little sleep 😆

Request a meeting with the SENCO at the nursery. What type of nursery is it? If you think an EHCP may be needed, you can request an EHCNA yourself. IPSEA and SOSSEN has lots of helpful information on their websites, including model letters you can use to request an EHCNA.
