Dyslexia & EHCNA assessment

Ds10 has been diagnosed dyslexic & processing issues. None is a surprise as he’s struggled since preschool/reception. His STT report states that the school says he receives significant TA support with all subjects and states his attainment has reduced since his screener along with being 2years behind which school also state. I have a meeting with SENDco next week, is it worth applying for an assessment? Are they ever considered on Dyslexia alone? I’m also a SEN TA at secondary so have been doing some of the recommendations & will continue. No experience in a personal capacity of this though. Has anyone any advice?

EHCPs are based on needs, not diagnosis. Most with dyslexia alone don’t need an EHCP, but some do. The legal test for an EHCNA is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need special educational provision to be made via an EHCP. You have nothing to lose by requesting an EHCNA.

DS is unlikely to get significant TA support at secondary without an EHCP.
