Minor issues in year 2 on senco list

Hi all, my son is in year 2 and has scraped through reception and year 1, failed the phonics test and in my opinion is only at reception age if thatp. The school keep saying they need to wait longer to see if any issues but I am very concerned at how behind he is. He goes in a small group for most of the school day and can’t do the work. It’s hard to know what’s going on as obviously I am not an expert. He doesn’t want to do any simple homework ever himself and seems to be scared because he can’t do it.

Not sure what I should do to progress getting help?

You can request an EHCNA yourself. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

Alongside this, request a meeting with the SENCO. The school must make their best endeavours to meet DS’s SEN now. They do not need to wait. Follow up the meeting with an email so you have a paper trail as evidence. If the SENCO refuses to provide support, escalate it to the HT.
