Hi All, My Son is absolutely brilliant academically but social he is beginning to show signs that he is struggling. School have just said they will start the assessment procedures. I am so anxious and upset about it. I have a million and one questions racing through my head. How do you start to deal with this???

Take a deep breath.
Being assessed won't 'change' him or give him a condition he doesn't already have.
What it may do is help everyone understand him better which will allow them to interact / teach him in a more suitable way.
What will be will be.

Thank you. I’m calming down now. I just want him to be happy.

I think understanding what the school means by “start the assessment procedures” will help you. Do they mean they will refer for a diagnostic assessment? If so, what for? Autism, ADHD… Or do they mean the SENCO will assess DS as part of the assessment/plan/do/review process - this isn’t a diagnostic assessment.

He can't be assessed for a medical condition without your consent. He can have any SEND needs (eg. questions of functional capacity rather than diagnosis of condition) considered, with you being informed, and then engaged in considering how any identified needs should be met, in partnership with school.
