ASD- What services does your child receive.

I am mum to a darling boy of 3 with ASD and I'm struggling to get any information from my local authority about a cohesive care package. My ds sees a specialist teacher once a fortnight and a speech therapist once a term. He has very limited verbal skills and I feel he needs a lot more intervention to progress.

Whilst I appreceiate that all children are different, I'd be really interested to know what services your children receive from the LHA/LEA.

I got very very little from the LEA, basically when he was diagnosed at 3 we got put on 2 year waiting lists for OT and SALT. So we decided to remortgage the house and pay ourselves. We tried loads of things, but the one that has worked best for my (formerly) non-verbal DS is ABA. I now bore people about how good it is, but if you'd like I can tell you some of the early techniques they used to get my son talking and behaving better . Finally, I have got the LEA to pay for 2/3 of his ABA therapy, but it took a long fight. I'm not sure of your financial situation, but if you can afford just one thing I would find an ABA (or more specifically VB) consultant in your area and pay them to come in and tutor your child. The earlier the better for ABA and 3 is a great time to start. My boy used to be aggressive, tantrummy, refusing to walk anywhere, obsessive and non-verbal. They've changed all of that. I can't recommend it too highly but I'll shut up now!

We are seriously considering ABA / VB as services from our LEA are extremely poor. We are in Essex by the way - I would be curious to know whether others have had a similar experience.

We're in essex too and can't get help with ABA. Treetops in Thurrock does VB but we've been told it will be very difficult to get into that nursery because we don't live within the catchment area and SALT only recommended PECS so no chance of getting LEA on or side
