EHCP support in reception

No real point to this post but my 5 year old had a school trip today. I went as a parent volunteer as I thought it would be useful for me to deal with DS who has an EHCP.

DS and I had a lovely day together which was a bonus but what was really lovely was seeing first hand the care his TA has for him. The TA wasn’t assigned to DSs group today (presumably because I was there) but she told him exactly where she’d be and she’d check in at lunchtime. We all met at lunch and I briefly left DS with his class, I could hear him getting upset but I came back to his TA holding his hands and practicing some calm breathing. At the end of the day she told DS she’d missed him and was looking forward to tomorrow.

We are due a meeting soon about DS’ transition to year one. Can I ask her to be in it? Do TAs ever move with the child anymore or will he have someone else in Y1? Should say there are other people who work with him, she’s not with him full time.

It will depend on the school, their other pupils and the wording in DS’s EHCP. You can ask, but the school may not agree.

It must be worth asking, the worst is that they say no.

My DD got very attached to her temporary 1to1, and when we explained to the school the difference she had made in those couple of weeks, they gave her the permanent contract. And when she moved from primary to middle-school, the TA came with her.
