Hoping to pick the brains of someone with more knowledge than me!

My 8 year old ds is undiagnosed with anything. But, he's been on ASD assessment waiting list for a year now (another to go!). He's on the SEN register and really struggles with self regulation. Hes always been anxious in the classroom but Since January he's started self harming in the classroom (biting, scratching, headbanging). As a way of minimising harm he's currently only doing mornings.

I applied for an EHCP last week and will be discussed on the 23rd. I'm torn whether to deregister him and home educate him or keep him in school until the EHCP process is complete.

My question is: if I home educate him am I right in thinking the EHCP process would continue and if it's successful I could name a more appropriate school?

Thanks for any insight

If you deregister and EHE the EHCP process continues.

However, personally, I wouldn’t deregister. Parents often find it easier, although not easy, to get support when DC remain in the system even if they can’t attend. Crudely, DS is currently someone’s problem. Whereas if you EHE it is easier for professionals to sweep DS’s needs under the carpet. At the moment, if DS can’t attend school the LA has a duty to ensure alternative provision is received, but if you deregister the LA will say you are making suitable alternative arrangements thereby relieving them of their duty.

You also need to consider deregistering and re-entering a more appropriate school via an EHCP may not be a quick process. The process takes 20 weeks if you don’t have to appeal. Many do have to appeal, though, sometimes more once and waits are long.

Wow! @Headfirstintothewild thank you for the reply. This is what I thought. That if I EHE then I'm effectively making adjustments myself.
I can definitely see that the process would be more difficult.
