We are going to get dd 17 assessed for dyslexia. Can anyone recommend where to get this privately.
she is doing an apprenticeship so we can't access an assessment through them

Personally, I would look at a full assessment by an educational psychologist rather than an assessment by a dyslexia assessor.

Hi,
thanks for the reply. Why is the psychologist better than an assessor?

A full ed psych assessment will look at all areas in greater depth and breadth than an assessment by a dyslexia assessor.

An Ed Psych can use a much better cognition test than the standard WRIT which a dyslexia assessor can use. I use some brilliant dyslexia assessors who are better than some Ed Psychs but I tend only to recommend them if I am very sure that it is just dyslexia. There are some truly awful Ed Psychs out there steer clear of one in particular in Kent (Bromley) we have stopped accepting his reports as have many other schools. Try the Helen Arkell website as a start and the BDA and PATOSS.

Do also bear in mind DLD. A lot of that is misdiagnosed as dyslexia or they can be concurrent. If there are comprehension issues - particularly inferential differences then do also consider a SALT.
