Homework Tips for ADHD

I have a daughter with ADHD who is in year 7. She's really struggling to do any homework at all. I've got two questions:

  1. Could anyone recommend any online resources or any professionals who could help?

  2. She gets on best with award-based quizzes, which she has for maths and Spanish. Does anyone know of a good one for science?

Thanks very much!

Have a look at Tassomai.

Have you spoken to the school? Do they have a homework club? Some DC drop homework from some/all subjects. Others drop a subject and complete it during that time.

Lots of DC with additional needs need more support and scaffolding with homework both to help them organise themselves and to actually complete it. Is DD better when you sit with her to do it? Or does she see that as you interfering?

I agree with PP - "homework" is a series of steps, all of which can be tricky if you have executive function deficits. It'll be useful to see where exactly your DD struggles..

  • writing down the homework, can this be avoided
  • knowing what to actually do
  • knowing how long to spend on it
  • knowing when to hand it in
  • using a homework planner to do homework at the right time so it's not late
  • getting started on homework
  • doing work at home, distractions etc
  • being super tired after school as working so hard at keeping up with the NT pupils

Q: “How Can We Create a Homework and Study Plan That Works for an ADHD Brain?”

“Most parents (not all) think the best place for their students to do homework is quietly at a desk in their bedroom with the door shut. Now for some, that works. For others, a secluded bedroom can feel isolating and make concentrating harder.”

It is tricky but do reach out to her head of year/head of key stage for help. It's a really common problem in year 7.

Our school record all homework on ClassCharts. Other apps that are used are Teams and Show My Homework. Does her school use one of those? Do parents have access?

She may be more willing to do it actually on school premises so explore homework club/study hall/subject clinics/library/mentoring (our year 12s read with year 7 before school).

Quizlet is a good site and so is BBC Bitesize. Some of my students like Seneca, although I think that's for older ones maybe.
