SATS

DS (6 - yr 2) does not have a statement, but does struggle at school. He is wtg Clinical Phsyc appt. Behaviour is poor, which has a knock on effect on his learning. He is a poor reader and writer and know he's taken out of maths for special group work. He also tells me when the rest of the class do comprehension he does work on a computer with an assistant.

What do schools do with kids like him when it's time for Sats? I know he couldn't even read the words let alone answer questions on them.

Any info gratefully received!

Ah, sounds like ds2 at the same stage- he was awaiting a statement but they didn't put any help in place.

Is he on the register of special needs with the LEA? if you're not sure, ring and ask.

TBH I wouldn't worry- DS1's complete failure to perform in his SATs (he got elvel 2 but school then admitted they'd bumped him up a level for enthusiasm ) meant that on transfer to Juniors he got put in all the special help classes above and beyond his 1-1 for 10 hours, and as a result he was dx'd with dyslexxia as an addition to his AS/ HFA. He can't read with any real ability at 8, and he still cannot spell his name despite being V bright.

I would personally ignore SATs (just dont even mention them to him- pretend they are so insignificant its unbeleivable) and then use any poor results as a lever to get help next year.

I am suspecting dyslexia, but school not mentioning it at all!

Sometimes feel it's only me with a son like this - sure helps to realise it's not!

Hve a look at the IPSEA website for info on the stages of support- things like IEP's etc.

Most schools I know of assess for dyslexia in yr 2 or yr3, ds1's (I meant ds1 in my original post!) was missed in yr2 but picked up later, whilst ds2 was dx'd in yr2 but tbh Dh and I are not convinced at all.

he may be offered someone to transcribe his tests. my son is in yr 6 and suspected dyspraxic and he is going to be having transcription done for him.

Even more interesting - all good ideas to go armed with to parents evening next week!
