Wondering if i could be doing more and if so, what.
My DS is 9 and about to go into y5. He is at y1 level for reading, writing and maths. He has a EHCP but i'm just wondering if i should get him assessed for dyslexia/autism etc

i have started to think i need to be looking at high schools soon and making sure he will get the support he needs. i asked the Senco at his school now if i should try get him assessed for a diagnosis but she said that is what his EHCP is.

any advice welcome :)

EHCPs are based on needs rather than diagnosis.

A diagnosis in and of itself won’t alter the support DS receives. The exception to this is if you are thinking of a SS - some only accept DC with a diagnosis e.g. some ASD SS only accept those with s formal diagnosis. The other exception is in some areas the ASD specialist teaching service only works with DC with a formal diagnosis.

If you think DS has ASD you can look at a diagnosis. In some areas you can self refer. If you can’t the school or GP will be able to.

When was DS last assessed by an ed psych?

A diagnosis could be really helpful in terms of pointing you in the direction of exactly what type of support and help could be of value. Whether then you update the EHCP to reflect it would be up to you / the school / the local authority.
