I’ve just applied for child disability and was wondering if anybody has recent experience of how long it took for a decision to be made for their application?

Hi @Silverbook, I applied beginning of January for my son. The application has been processed but hasn’t yet been picked up by a case manager for decision making. I contacted SSS today for an update but was told it may be another couple of months before it’s looked at.

I wasn’t expecting that! So you’re essentially looking at 8-9 months?

Yeah the wait time seems to be getting longer unfortunately due to the backlog of applications. When I first applied I looked on here to see how long other peoples experiences were and it was around 5/6 months then. If awarded though you will get a back payment to the date of application which softens the blow a bit but in the meantime it’s just a waiting game. If you need to contact them for an update, I’d try the online chat first thing in the morning at 8am. There only seems to be a short wait to get connected to someone. Any other part of the day you can be on hold for hours!

i applied for my son's CDP on 28th February, and sent in a lot of supporting evidence. we had the award letter mid-May. maybe depends how much evidence they receive? Hope you dont have too long to wait.

i have applied for the adult disability payment as i have Ehlers danlos syndrome and its getting worse, i think im looking at around another 6-7 month wait from now. (applied April)

Thank you both for your replies. I sent evidence of his speech assessments, diagnosis and medication but now wondering if I should have included other evidence too. I might just send that tomorrow any way- if there is such a backlog it shouldn't matter that it's not with the original application. Thank you both again.

We applied end of January for the first part of the form and second part was completed mid March. Our case manager called me about 2 weeks ago to get some further information on his nightime care but we kept missing the call so I only spoke with them 2 days ago. They said they have everything they need now to make a decision so hopefully shouldn’t be too long now. Send in as much supporting information as you can the more the better as it makes it easier for them to make a decision especially if you don’t have a diagnosis yet. I sent in more at a later date when I received certain reports etc

Just received our decision letter for our son after applying end of January for first part and mid March for second part. Hope this gives people an idea of wait times

Just got my DC's award for CDP. Applied September last year, got awarded March. It has taken six months.
