Looking for tips and advice.
My DC will be starting reception this September - very bright, has worked out most social stuff at nursery although a lot of it is likely masking to an extent, some sound and texture sensitivities which DC cannot mask through, loves rules. Very good at stories, numbers and any sort of musical thing with a beat. Great memory. Less good at coordination and sport, despite always trying. Hugely empathic and sensitive to the feelings and “vibes” of others. Can do all the “reception skills” like toileting, dressing, paying attention. Has friends at nursery but teachers say can sometimes be on the outside of activities.
I expect there will eventually be an ASD diagnosis, though NHS assessor at age 3 said not enough to merit intervention and come back age 6.
My questions are two fold:
- what would be the most useful thing to focus on with DC over the summer? Is it coping with noise/texture and talking about how that’s ok and what works to fix it (telling a teacher/finding a quiet place)? Friendships?
- what should I say to the school and when (it is a private school in case that makes a difference)?
Huge thanks in advance, just trying to pick my way through this in good time and give myself an idea of what to expect, too.
