Child can't cope with school

My 5yo DS seems unable to cope with being at school. Since he started he's had problems and gets in trouble every day, especially the afternoons usually for not concentrating on his work and for messing about. They've tried various strategies but nothing seems to be helping.

If he has adhd I don't think we can get an ehcp for a while because they're supposed to be 6 before they're even assessed for it, then there's the whole process to go through.

Has anyone been through this? What did you do?

This isn’t correct. You can apply for an EHCNA now, you don’t need a diagnosis for an EHCP.

In the meantime the school can apply for high needs top up funding if they need more funding to provide additional support. Have the school identified triggers? Tried movement breaks, sensory circuits, wobble cushion, time out card, Zones of Regulation? Do the school have a nurture group, emotional literacy support? How are the school dealing with DS’s behaviour?

No I don't think they've tried all those things consistently 😕

I meant to add that when he does focus he doesn't seem to have learning problems

If they haven’t even tried those suggestions consistently they could be doing more to support DS. Have you spoken to the SENCO?
