I'm not helping my autistic child

I'm really not coping with our 9yo child with autism. He is spirited and very hyperactive and spontaneous, and he often hits, spits and shouts uncontrollably. I don't deal with it at all well and end up shouting at him, removing him from situations and just basically doing everything wrong. I've asked for help from Dr's, school and outside OTs and have got nothing.

Please help me to understand and help my child. I don't want to constantly be resenting him for behaviour he cannot control.

Does DS have an EHCP?

Is he receiving ongoing therapies?

Have you done the Earlybird plus or similar course?

Have you had social care assessments? A carer’s assessment for you and an assessment via the disabled children’s team for DS.

Some parents find counselling helps.

I would recommend a course of NVR (Non Violent resistance). We have tried all sorts of things with our similarly aged child on the spectrum and that was the most useful.

Also, I am sorry OP, but if you want any proper help in this country you have to pay for it :(

Also get the books The Explosive Child and 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child.

Also go on the websites of the autism charities and find a Facebook group of other local parents in the same situation.

Your son is anxious. Do you know what things he's most anxious about?

phineyj with a good EHCP that doesn’t need to be the case, although you may need to appeal to secure the good EHCP.

OK, I shall amend...to get any help in a timely fashion!
