My son wants to live a life similar to most people. I am really disappointed I am having to prove to all the authorities the help he needs. I feel like I am re-inventing the wheel again! When there are around 700,000 Autistic people in the UK plus 1.5 million learning disabled. Could County have learnt from the experiences to help us? They must know what he needs as a teenager loose in the community with a learning disability to gain his independence safely.
The school is more concerned with spamming me with fundraising other than information about my child, just as the school could have let us know about the head banging, other than in a review report. I had to issue a SAR to find out about behavioural incidents which most parents would prefer to receive compared to fundraising information.
We were hoping to get help from the Autism Accredited school for years now rather than us having to Google and be supported by support groups and another Autistic Specialist School. The School must have years of experience and had had hundreds of people on their caseload. Could they have learnt from the experience to help us? County are obviously going to use the "he was out unsupervised" thing. The wording they are using is so typical of schools. Fact is "he was out unsupervised" for years, no urgent concern from any of the agencies involved with us. I am really disappointed I find myself in this situation. It puts a lot of pressure on us parents to get things right for DS.
I want the same help anybody else gets with a teenager loose in the community with a learning disability to gain his independence safely. The Preparing for Adulthood document did mention travel training which I found out, the onus had been put on us parents to sort it out, which I have. The County "get out clause" is "well we did signpost you" !.
Could you please make it easier of what is available to DS.
