Ds is in yr 10 has an EHCP for a small special school that ends in yr 11. He is going to need to do GCSE retakes and /or BTECs. He has dyslexia , ASD and a language disorder. The school have suggested the local college but there is no way he would cope. It seems like the special schools are aimed at those who need to learn life skills. DS is more capable than that, but not A level standard so can't get into the local sixth form . What type of setting should I be looking for?

There are SS like you describe and specialist colleges. Also some MS FE colleges have a SEN/foundation/personalised learning department that is separate from the main college. If you post where you are someone may have suggestions.

Thank you. I shall investigate. I just assumed he would return to mainstream. But I'm not sure that's a good idea.
