Unusual first words

Hi all,

My 18 month hasn’t up till this point spoke. No single words or meaningful sounds or animal sounds although he is able to make a whole range of sounds. He doesn’t copy vocalisations or actions etc. This amongst other things has flagged possible ASD. We have been referred for speech and language as his communication is below normal expectations.

ANYWAY we are convinced he is saying “what is it?” When picking up objects. He doesn’t say any other meaningful words or phrases either at home or nursery. It also seems a lot to jump from nothing to a phrased question.

Has anyone else had experience with language delays or unusual first words ??

My DD2's first words were "What a dooty?" which we realised was "What' ya doing??" which was what DH always said to her when he went in to get her out of her cot in the morning or after a nap.

So it was a first sentence...not a first word.

She'd run them all together like "Whaddadooty?"
