Dyslexia symptom?

My 7 year old has told me that she read a full book out loud with her teacher today, this is a big deal as she's never done this with me before. However, she's just told me that any part of of a letter that's vertical goes 'all wiggly' and then the letters looked 'like they were coming out of the page but went back in'.

I'll mention this to the school on Monday but wondered if this is a sigh of dyslexia or something else? My DH and I have wondered for a while about dyslexia as DD really struggles with reading, the week the schools closed in March she was supposed to have a test of some sorts done at school. Any ideas?

Yes, letters that appear to be moving on the page can be a sign of dyslexia. This could be corrected by simply using a coloured overlay, my daughter has green lenses glasses and it’s made an enormous difference.
If the school were going to assess her then I would suggest chasing that up. Children aren’t typical assessed before the age of 7, and, personally, I would want an assessment and strategies put in place before the end of year 3.

If she's having the visual difficulties you describe, I'd suggest you first step should be a sight test. They're free on the NHS.

Search for visual stress or Irlen's syndrome
