Is ADD on the autistic spectrum

I’m very confused!! If a child is tested for autism will it highlight ADD and vice versa or will she require different diagnostic tests? Thank you.

DS had separate assessments for ADD/ADHD and ASD through CAMHS.

No, an ASD assessment wouldn't diagnose ADD. But, the HCP carrying out the assessment may notice the possibility of another condition and go on to assess for that or suggest a referral to someone who can.

Thanks. Would an Ed psych be ok rather than clogging up CAMHS? Or does it have to be CAMHS?

EPs can't diagnose ASD or ADD. In some areas it would be CAMHS and in others it would be community paeds.

@10brokengreenbottles by community paeds does that mean psychiatrists? CAMHS waiting list is years apparently. If we can go private who is the best professional to see please? Clinical psychologist; psychiatrist; someone else? If I search on google there’s lots claiming to diagnose all sorts but I’m very confused by it all. I’ve also heard that some diagnoses aren’t accepted if nhs therapy needed or educational support required.

If you go private you would be best to look for someone who also works in the NHS, and someone who is experienced in assessing girls. For an ASD assessment look at the Lorna Wing.

Community paeds would be a team led by a consultant paediatrician. Who else the MDT consists of would depend on your area. In the areas that diagnose ASD via community paeds the paediatrician will often be a neurodevelopmental paed.

If you google ASD and your area you can probably find who assesses for ASD/ADD in your CCG.
