Hi everyone. I have a 6 year old son that potentially has autism, we don't know yet because he's not been diagnosed. The school say they are doing everything that they can to put in a referral for him to be assessed. What I want to know is, why do they keep telling me that I should not take him to the GP because they won't do anything yet they tell a friend of mine at the same school to take her son to the GP? I'm confused.

I don't think anyone can answer that, other than the school.

However, what you need to focus on is your ds.
I'm not 100% from your post if the school have referred him for an assessment ?
Where I work, schools can refer for an assessment, but I have learned from being on MN too much that it is different in different parts of the country, so go to the school and get a really clear answer.

I believe that all GPs can refer for an assessment, but - in parts of the country where schools can refer - there can be a perception that it is better coming from the school as they can paint a clearer picture of the child than the GP, who won't know them as well.
