Help child learn how to build sentences

Hi mums,

My 6yr old has dyspraxia and quite a severe speech delay. In homework now, he has to write a word and then put it into a sentence. They're simple words such as 'can', 'do', 'will', 'had' etc. but he is struggling hugely with it. Like he can't wrap his head around the concept. Has anyone any advise for games/exercises we can play to help him?

It's probably too late to respond to this question, but my take on this would be that if your son is struggling, this isn't an appropriate task for him. However he probably wants to go back to school with homework like the other children.

So what I would do is to write just one or two, very simple sentences that he would understand containing those words and let him copy them, if he can. He could take this back to school and I'd tell the teacher what I'm doing and why.

I'd be interested to know at what level he can write by himself.

Can you write a sentence, and ask him to choose which of the words fits in to the gap ?

"Shall we put 'can' / 'will' / 'do' / had' in there ?"

If that is quite tricky, then leave it at that. If he 'gets' that instantly, you could extend it by saying - "Now, can you think of another sentence we can use the word 'had' in?" . Even if he just changes it to "Lara had a cut on her knee from when she fell over, he is beginning to get the concept.
