how to deal with the school's attitude to this situation

sorry if this is in the wrong place....not really sure where to put it.

to be brief....someone we know has just had her daughter assessed after finally getting her daughter referred via a private tutor as the school refused repeatedly to put her forward. she has now been for her assessment and has her report but the school have told her that her daughter can have one hour a week with a group session as 'there are others with greater needs than hers, and we don't have the resources'.

she needs more help than this but her parents are really not sure how to deal with this situation. how do they ensure their daughter gets the help she needs and is entitled to?

any advice, links or phone numbers would be appreciated.

Assessed for what?

sorry...it's all new to me.

she cannot work unless in a one to one situation....she has to be constantly reminded that she has work to do. has issues with dyslexia....fidgets, reading is behind.....i do know it was the dyslexia institute she went to for the assessment.(sorry, her mother doesn't really understand what it is all about so i'm not sure either)

she just needs a bit of help finding out who to talk to so she can make sure the school don't keep fobbing her off like they have done for the last three years.

There should be a parent advisor employed by the LEA who would look into it and advise. Or go via the GP. Parents are also able to apply to the LEA for their child to be assessed.

Does the report suggest that she would benefit from a statement?

How old is she?

Yes it sounds as though they need to get the LEA involved - they can then work with the school to allocate support

i'll tell her to get in touch with the LEA and ask for their help.
