Re-taking the school year

Has anyone ever held their child back a year? What was the outcome?

I have a dd in year 2 who is about a year behind.

I need to make the decision this week.

My friend at Uni was held back a year at the age of 10/11. She reckons it did her a world of good (she had dyslexia)

Thanks - someone told me that it's best to do it while they're younger - but it's all so last minute, nearly the end of term.

Our LEA won't permit it in any circumstances (have tried to figt it to no avail) they say evidence is that it is always to the negative

They do however have a Big Agenda

my neice has been held back in reception she has learning difficulties (at present testing is underway and has been for a year) recently went to visit a SN school who strongly advised against it.

DS3 has quite amrked delays yet they wouldn't even consider it- was reception or nothinga s far as LEA were concerned

SENCo told me this morning that LEA won't allow it but I know someone who has done it but we're meeting tomorrow.

My dd is suddenly catching up and I think if she retakes this year she will be at the same level as the others and possibly beyond. If she continues now she'll get disheartened because she'll spend another year being behind.

I don't know about your LEA, but ours has just brought it in as a policy now.
I feel like you that DS3- whilst never goingt o be top of the year- could probably cope after a bit of catch up time (he's also a late July baby which doesn't help) but its a no. LEA wouldn't even discuss it.

Hi, i don't know your circumstances or what you DDs SNs are, but my first thought was can the school not offer her some extra help/support in her present year group, rather than holding her back a year. As a parent of child with SNs I know how difficult obtaining this can be. I would however be very reluctant to hold a child back a year. Also when is her birthday? I would be alot more reluctant to hold back an autumn born child than a summer born. If you haven't already have a talk with your SENCO/LEA about the posibilty of extra help, 1:1 support etc.

She's getting 15 hourse of week support, it's just about keeping her development to the development of the class. She's nearly caught up already but I would like her to be really on top of things before she goes into juniors, otherwise she'll always be that bit behind. SENco agrees in principle, but full of details around logistics, cost etc.

Hi MrsMarvel, my DS1 went back to reception half way through year 1.
It has been the best thing for him, as he has always struggled with the work and still does, but now he is due to go into year 5 we are finding that we can't be sure that he will be accepted out of year in secondary school.
Think long and hard before you make any changes and if you do decide to make the move try and get something in writing to say that the LEA accept the move and will support it in the future.
When we made the move the LEA allowed such things, now they don't.
It is all very stressful, not knowing if it is going to be a big problem or not, on top of the normal worries about getting into a school.
