Better and Worse LEAs

Hi,

Is there somewhere to check which Local Authorities tend to be better or worse with SEN?

We're moving across the country (somewhere between Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham). My daughter has just received an EHCP (new "statement"), and we want to make sure to move to an area that is equipped to meet her needs.

Any links, or advice, or "word on the street" is more than welcome.

Nottingham are good. They also have a flagship programme for children and young people with ASD transitioning to adulthood. My sister works closely with them. If I leave London that's where I would go.

By reputation Derbyshire is better than Derby city, that said we have had great help so far from city. Depends on what the specific needs are in your EHCP to some extent

Her EHCP is mostly about speech and language difficulties from global developmental delay. She currently has 1:1 TA support full-time.

These are quite diverse area's to live in, what are you hoping for big city? Small village? Suburbs? Will jobs constrain location? All of these will shape any help we can give you

In Derby we have a charity called Umbrella who give fantastic support on special needs that may give you more specific advice

There's a thread on Special Needs Chat about Derbyshire where they have directly lied to a parent about provision post 16. I would be wary of them.

With an EHC plan, the new authority will have to decide whether to adopt it as it is or do a review and produce their own plan. But even if they do, the substance of the plan shouldn't be too different and whichever local authority it is will have a duty by law to provide everything that is set out in section F. It does however need to be sufficiently clear and detailed.
