At parents evening on Weds teacher came straight out with 'I think we should apply to put (DD) on the SEN register'. No preamble, nothing. We knew there were a couple of issues that we wanted to discuss in terms of behaviour at home but were totally stunned. DH is absolutely furious and is refusing to even accept there could be a relatively minor problem. Cue much shouting about labelling DD as a problem child that will be on some mythic 'record' for ever more. Have checked info with LA and frankly all seems quite reasonable, any help at present would be useful. However I have seen nothing relating to confidentiality and who (if anyone) can access info on DD now or in the future. Can anyone help with this please, need to reassure v grumpy DH

I don't think the teacher has gone about this in a very good way! In theory, being on a register will enable the school to access better resources to help your daughter, so it's usually a good thing. My son has a statement and it enables him to get a lot of extra help which he couldn't do without. I don't think it is a record people can access after school or will be detrimental to the future. It might be worth you speaking to your local parent partnership who can give you better informed and detailed information regarding how your local education authority works in respect of supporting SEN.
