Social services paying for private tuition?

Hi All,

Just wanted to get some thoughts on this.

I am a private tutor and have just been contacted by someone who says they are studying from home, in their second year of A levels and wants to be home schooled. He has asked if he can pass my details on to social services, as they will be paying for his tuition.

This seems a little bit unusual to me as I'm not sure if there are any circumstances SS would step in to help fund private education, especially post GCSE. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I get quite a lot of fake 'students' contacting me for various reasons and was wondering if this could possibly be one of them.

I am an advisory teacher for Looked After Children, and although this is not standard practice, it can happen in exceptional circumstances. However, I would expect the social worker or the Virtual head to be arranging the tuition, not the child.

I would ask for the contact details of the child's social worker and call or email them to confirm the arrangement. You will also need to speak to them in order to glean a clear picture of the child, and the reasons it has been decided that 1:1 tuition is necessary.
