Starting YR a year late?

This is for a friend of mine. Her DS has a mild speech delay and is having SLT support. She is very happy with the support offered so far, but as his birthday is 31st August, he is literally 4 hours too old for the year below! Is it possible to defer for a whole year and have him permanently in the year below? Most of his preschool friends are the lower year, and she thinks he would benefit from another year less formal education to allow his speech to catch up. Therapist says he will catch up, but friend would like him not to be really behind from the start. She has applied for this years entry, and I know you can delay until summer term, but not sure if entry into the 'wrong' year is possible.

Any advice?

Hi
It is possible but usually LEAs don't like to agree it unless very good reasons. If your friend has a school in mind or is at the school nursery, she could speak to the head about it.
