Dyslexia - new academic year and getting the new class teachers on board

Hi All,

I'm just wondering how you address the new class teachers to introduce your child and their dyslexia. I know notes are passed on from previous teachers and special needs depts etc but was wondering how you start the flow of conversation between teacher and home?

Not actually delaing with dyslexia but dispraxia. However I took in about 5 copies of ed psyche report, my daughtes end of term report and a written letter from me and arranged a meeting with the teacher for next week!! May come over to her as a bit pushy - but am determined not to get my DD lost again as it seems to take til xmas each time before the new crew are on board.

My DD has brought home home work already that seems totally over her head but we are staying chilled until the meeting.

I am also meeting the SNC at the end of the month.

I wouldn't rely on smooth communication as SNC's are v busy and this gets forgotten.

Lauire, That sounds like a great way to do it. I too am determined to get things on the right path straight away.

There is a meet the team meeting for my sons year on Friday so i am going to that armed with a list of everything my son finds hard due to his dyspraxia. I am going to take three copies as they stream for english and maths so he potentially has three teachers. I am leaving nothing to the senco as from ds report last year it came across as if his maths teacher had no idea that he has sen. I am also determined that he won't get overlooked and forgotten this year.

Last year I went in and saw every teacher in subjects where I thought DD would struggle. I didn't really do it till Term 2, wish I'd done it earlier. Just go in and spea to them - they usually want to do the best anyway and it stops your child from being lost.If there is an IEP then it should be happening but I found that things fell through the cracks constantly at the start of Y7.

So i met with the class teacher and SEN. But I think you are right I need to meet with all subject teachers just to be sure that his needs are known.

My DS who is dyslexic has started in y7 and senco has been fab, all his teachers are aware of his needs, homework has been written by his teachers in his books, emails with homework home also, new special grips for his pens. Email asking if he is ok anything else he needs etc. it's early days but both happynsonfar.

Like you - always give the teacher time to settle as don't want to appear too frantic, but by now I want to have some time to chat directly with her now that she has had some time to know DD ( Yr4).
