Writing words and letters backwards.

Does this always mean dyslexia? DD2 is 6 and in year 1. She's started to write words backwards and often gets letters like b and d mixed up. DH is dyslexic and never got any help at school and as such his education suffered immensely. So we're keen to have this picked up on asap if it is.

Problem at the moment is dd2's teacher (who is very very good and set us on the very long path of eventually having dd1 diagnosed with ASD when dd1 was in reception), has been off sick since the third week of term. So they've been having a mix up of supply teachers and TAs teaching them since. Her parents evening was cancelled because her teacher's off. Obviously hope her teacher recovers and is well again, but I'm concerned this won't be picked up on because of the inconsistency in teaching.

Am I worrying over nothing? Could it be just a developmental phase?

You need to speak to the SENCO.

Reversals were the most obvious symptoms of ds having dyslexia. He was a bit younger that your dd but I'm glad I started pestering for tests early as they refused to even consider dyslexia until aged 7 in his school.
