Help me to understand please

My DD is in Reception, in the bottom of her class. I think there is a problem but I don't know what it is. School says that every thing is fine.

She still mixes he/him and she/her when speaking.
Struggles with recognising numbers beyond 10
Writes backwards
Struggles with blending
is a bit childish compared to her peers.
struggles with reading

I think I coud help her so much better if I knew what the problem was.

What could it be?

In the bottom of her class? Who declared her 'bottom'? How old is she? Is she just 4 or nearly 5?

DD2 is 4.7. She is doing 'well', I think.

She still mixes he/him, she/her, 'comed' 'eated' 'sitted' etc. - We have a really complicated language, with many variations of rules.

Recognising numbers - do you mean that she can't recognise that 13 is a 1 and a 3, or the actual name? Again, the language is quite complex. We have completely different words for the numbers between 10-20, then suddenly we revert to '20 and 1' '20 and 2' '20 and 3'....

Write backwards - is that everything? Or some of the more common letters such as 's' 'b' 'd' 'p'?

It sounds like her school have very high expectations?

I don't think you should ignore your gut feeling. My DD1 is educated in special school, so I do know a little about SEN. I'm just not sure a 4 year old should be judged SEN if she is 'just' a little behind at such an early stage.

I wouldn't be too concerned abou her being a bit slow off the mark with reading/writing etc, as it is such early days. I would be more bothered about your feeling she seems more "childish" than her peers, would want to keep an eye out for how she socialises. Do you have any concerns about her hearing, or her understanding instructions etc?

I asked her teacher her postion in her class. She is 5. Yes, she struggles with b and d. She doesn't always remember 13. Her hearing is fine. I had her tested.

She is just a little behind you are right, but is it going to get worst or is she going to catch up? I would like to do every thing I can to help and I can clearly see that she is behind her peers.

The teacher doesn't think she is dyslexic, but she is too young anyway for a proper assessment. I just don't know what could be the problem.

It is possible for a child to catch up, my lad had language delay, and struggled with reading and blending in reception, then suddenly made lots of progress halfway through year 1. Has your teacher given you any idea if they are planning to give her any extra support, or of fun stuff you can do at home to help her progress? In general I found that playing simple board games and doing simple cooking with my boy helped practice maths in a fun way.
