what constitutes a 'statement' of educational needs?

My son has recently undergone an Occupational Therapy assessment and also a speech and language assessment. He is bright and mentally capable but this isnt carried through to his written work (his writing/drawing is years behind his able peers) nor his verbal communication/behaviour.

I have received a long report from the OT - with various recommendation 'to enable ds2 to acces the national curriculum'.

I am still waiting for the speech and lang report.

This is all new to me, so I am wondering what this means.

PS DS2 is 6.5 and in year 2

A statement is a specific document which details what a Childs additional needs are. You need to apply to your Lea to obtain one. Although occasionally a school or Lea will start the prices for you.

It has legal implications as it sets out what the childs needs are so that they can ensure that they are met.

My ds2s statement simply states that his special needs school constitute appropriate provision.
For other it may specify one to one support or s&l etc.

Is that what you wanted.

Hello, MrsR, (it's SoMuchToBits, you may recognise me). I'm sorry I don't have any experience of this sort of thing, but didn't want your post to go unanswered.

The only thing I would say is that my own ds, although very bright, also struggled with writing (although not the verbal stuff). One of the things for him seems to be the physical effort of writing - it all takes too long, when his brain is miles ahead. Don't know whether this is the sae for your ds.

The report I have is not from the LEA - it was ordered by his school (which is private). However, he will be going to a state school for year 3 - so I am not sure how to get the LEA involved

Unless your present school would apply to the LA to kick off the statementing process then you may want to go to the website that smallwhitecat has linked to and instigate the statmenting process yourself, or ask the new school to do it.

You can go straight to applying for a Statement doc without being on either School Action or School Action plus beforehand.

I would personally apply for a Statement to the LEA asap and not rely on any school to do it (some schools can sit on such apps for ages without doing anything).
