Hull - Relocation

Last week I finally settled on Hull as somewhere new to start-over after a heart-breaking bereavement. But this week, I’m confused and in tears after the horrid riots there. Concerned I completely misread the warm friendly cosmopolitan vibe I felt when I visited. So, I thought I'd reach out for a brutally honest local perspective, as I’m not from the region.

Is Hull somewhere safe or not for a grieving Asian male to live, learn to smile again and heal? Or are there just areas of Hull I should avoid?

I appreciate this is all very subjective. But any thoughts on Hull as a safe friendly place for an Asian Indian to relocate or not, will help me stop spinning at a very difficult time.

Thanks,
Dev.

I live near Hull, and I'm so sorry that you're re-thinking your plans in light of these events. As a white woman, my experience is obviously completely different to your own, but I can say that the riots are absolutely untypical, just as they are in other cities. I can't speak about everyday racism, though I imagine it's similar to most other towns with a mixture of communities. Hull needs energetic, motivated people. It's generally a friendly place, full of opportunity. Please don't be put off by these unusual events.

Hi tishtishboom (cool handle). Thank you for confirming what I suspected and hoped. Any thoughts on areas to avoid?

Personally I'd stick with the Avenues, at least to start with, until you get to know the city a bit better.

I would avoid Orchard Park/north hull estates.

There's a very large Asian community around Spring Bank with lots of thriving businesses and restaurants.

Hi @satdev I have just come across this post whilst doing some research for work purposes and I wondered what you settled on in the end, have you made Hull your new home? If so, I hope you are enjoying it here and have seen the real side of our city. Best of luck! :)
