Video editing

Hello, has anyone had experience of using someone to help with video editing for a platform like Vimeo or Youtube? What were the costs for a 3-5 minute video?

The content would be fairly simple - filmed overhead with some audio narration plus music. I would also want a title, subheadings and a thumbnail. No talking to camera.

For various reasons, I would like to get this done by someone else. Mostly because I know that if I tried to do this myself, I would probably spend days weeks perfecting the process for a single video rather than focusing on the content. Whereas I want to get this underway fairly swiftly.

Thanks.

I have a tech VA - this would problem take them an hour max and cost £30 - that’s their hourly rate and the first hour they charge in full regardless of time taken.

but I know others that would do it for more or less on various groups.

when I do stuff like that would probably take me 30 mins depending on for ay delivered in and if you give me the times of the video where you want the headings or text to go etc. Also if you want it uploading to YouTube, how detailed you are on fonts etc to be used etc etc.

some VAs might offer this, others might want to use someone calling themselves a video editor..

I’ve seen this quoted from £20 - 40+

Oh thank you @TheCatterall I had previously asked on a freelancers' page and received 'how long is a piece of string' and 'it depends' replies. Which is no help if you don't know if a piece of string normally costs £10, £100 or £1000!

I would definitely be happy to pay £30. Would you be willing to share the name of your VA please?

I am getting the sense that you are in more of a tech role yourself so would perhaps charge more?

@AnonyLonnymouse - yeah I see a lot of responses like this in groups. I can understand them some times but you have laid out adequate details about your needs for someone to be able to ‘guesstimate’ a quote.

to anyone experienced with video editing - and your request is entry level skill wise - this shouldn’t take long.

I use my son and another VA for tech, marketing and admin work, including podcast, video, graphic design and social media shenanigans.

I started off in 2004 doing Tech Va work and still do it for occasional clients that I like. I tend to do more of the business strategy and management now and have a second business doing similar for charities.

so - yes myself or my son could do it within the next week. I can also ask Molly as well if she has space for any extra work.

Would you like me to dm you our details? I can also share some business group I’m in that might help going forward for future queries?

Thank you, a DM with the details would be great.

It definitely wouldn’t be next week as I would need to film some more content, so it could be fitted in as needed.

Just to add, I would be looking to do a ‘series’ of these short videos rather than it being a one-off, if that works for you.

But obviously I would start with one and see how that went.

When I started uploading basic tutorial videos for YouTube, I felt very much the same way, editing seemed like it would eat up way more time than I wanted. I paid a freelancer about £25-£35 per video and it was quick, but sometimes I'd have to wait for small changes or explain exactly what I wanted, so even though it saved me time, the back and forth could slow things down if I wasn’t super clear with instructions. Your plan of starting with one and seeing how it feels makes sense.

If you ever fancy doing a bit of editing yourself just to get things out faster, there are some really beginner-friendly apps out there. I actually learned a lot about what’s possible from looking at options like https://www.movavi.com/learning-portal/free-video-cutter.html, since they have some free tools and easy tutorials that show how to trim, add subtitles, and knock together a thumbnail pretty fast.
