We are a small business (mechanics/garage) and we’ve been trying to advertise a job vacancy. I posted a job on the gov.uk find a job website and was waiting for them to verify us as a company (which I totally understand). I received an email to ask for further details so that they could verify us which I was expecting and have no problems providing but at the end there was this:

Please confirm as to why you have registered to the Find a Job website using a Gmail email address.

Now we are a small garage, our communication with customers is via phone, never emails. If we order anything we ring for parts or order online. We don’t sell anything online.
We interact with a lot of other garages and small car sales places and they also have non business email addresses. We just feel it is an added cost we do not want or need, gmail does everything we need it to do. Is it really that rare/wrong to not have a business email that adds to a monthly expense?

Just tell them that :)

I generally find it weird and sometimes a bit suspicious if a business has a website but no matching email, because on most hosting plans it's free and takes about three minutes to set up.

And it does look more professional to have one which matches your domain and your company.

But my businesses are all customer service heavy and email rather than phone based.

If you don't use email much for business I think Gmail is fine, so just explain to them exactly what you've said here.

I’m going to email back tomorrow and explain that we don’t have a website (again no need for it) and just explain. I just find it odd that it seems to be an expectation now, I always thought it depended on the nature of the business, maybe I need to get with the times 😂
