Has anyone ordered a BabyHawk from USA?

Did it get to you ok or did it get stopped in customs and charged for?

I want one before May 21st so would i even have time to order one from there.

Another option is my BIL and SIL live in Oklahoma so would it be any quicker/cheaper asking them to order me one and them posting it to me?

TIA.

I ordered one years ago direct. It was cheaper due to the exchange rate at the time. I didn't get stung by customs but I have heard of people getting stung in the past. I put it down to the fact that some officers don't know what they are dealing with at the time.

it really is just your call which way you want to do it.

I ordered one from the USA in mid March this year (I'm in the UK) and it arrived 3 weeks later. It didn't get stopped in customs, but could have been, I guess, so it must be luck of the draw. (that said, I'm not sure what value of goods starts attracting import duty, or whatever they call it - maybe it was under the threshold anyway. Sorry to muddy the waters.)

Import duty starts at around £17. Royal Mail also charges an additional handling fee now. Their website explains the rules. Maybe they RM goes through phases when they crack down more than other times. Maybe RM some areas are more vigilant than in others. who knows.

If you are a member of UKbabywearingSwap you may be able to search their archives for conversations on this. There have been extensive and enlightening ones in the past.

Thanks all. I'm thinking I won't have enough time either way to order one from US (before my hols). I'm looking on some babywearing forums for a second hand one for now. I might get one from US if i really like one

Foxy - I work for Royal Mail so i know they add on a handling fee. When i was pg with ds2 i worked in the office where people pick up parcels (usually a collection driver) and did quite a lot of custom charges and they're not cheap.

yes, i have, and no it didn't!

if you want a custom one then sasaslings often do them, but it would be longer than you want to wait i think
I could ask Sandra who runs the site if they're planning another babyhawk pre-order soon though if you'd like?

I might have one for sale (if you like pink? lol)

SpawnChorus · 27/04/2010 21:38

I ordered two about two years ago, and didn't get charged any import duty.

Phoenix · 27/04/2010 21:42

I do but i don't think it will be good to carry my ds in .

I'll have a look on sasaslings, thanks.

I've seen a couple for sale on another forum so i'll hang on to see if i get any joy from those.

I really like the black calaveras ones but sa sa slings haven't got it in stock.

If a sale falls through on natural mamas forum i'm next in line for one

no, they sometimes do a pre-order thing thogh. so when they're due to order a load from babyhawk, you can go and choose exactly what you want and they'll just include it in their order. but obv takes a few weeks to come as it's a big order being made up, and then sasaslings need to send them out to you

Phoenix · 28/04/2010 07:35

Ooooh thanks I'll keep an eye out for that then x

I bought a babyhawk sling from bigmamaslings at the weekend. The lady i spoke to is very very helpful.

Ooh it sounds lovely!

I ordered a custom one from the US just before Christmas, double sided etc. When I receive it I'll update the thread to tell if/how much I got charged for import tax and VAT etc and also how many days it will take to arrive (from the customer service rep I was speaking to over email I got the impression they quote 10 working days to make a custom one and roughly 9 days to deliver internationally).

My wife did laugh at me whilst I was choosing from all the designs/colours, but I felt it important that there was a design that made both me and my wife happy to use it. She may not like the Skulls (Black Calveras) that I've got on my side!
