Advice on Moby holds please

DS2 is 8m and I have a Moby wrap that I've used since he was born on the advice of lovely ladies here. It works really well for us (pushchair still in loft) but I can't really get the hang of any holds except him facing me.

I do put him in facing forwards sometimes but after about 20 minutes he's sagged right down so all the fabric is in his crotch. He doesn't seem to mind, but it can't be great for him, and it's not comfy for me! I can't get the one where you wiggle a front hold round to a hip hold to work either.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks - I did wonder if that might be the case. Hoped not as I love my moby! Guess I need to do some more research - I know what ssc stands for and there my knowledge ends!

Have a look at www.slingguide.co.uk for lots of ties with a wrap (and links to videos showing you how to do them) - and places to get hold of them and other slings like SSCs and mei tais, used or new.
It is possible to do back carries with a wrap, stretchy or woven, without another person to put your son on your back - but like Loopymumsy says, at 8 months your Moby days may just be drawing to a close. See it as a chance to shop for a lovely new woven wrap, you've already tackled most of the learning curve of tying one!

PS I never got the hip thing to work with my Moby either - just did the front wrap cross carry. What you describe about facing-out sounds pretty typical too, it's just not as comfy for either of you .

Does facing out work with other sling styles?

Thanks loopy. I read the stuff on slingguide too on why facing out is a bad idea. May try a back carry at some point when DH is around and see what DS thinks of it.

Am really unsure about whether I should get another sling, or just stick with the Moby (which is fine for front carries) until the end of my maternity leave. We have a hippychick that DH likes (he can't get on with the Moby, it gives him backache - not sure what he's doing wrong) and a pushchair. And if I'm not doing school runs, I'm not sure if I need a sling. Or what sort I would get if I did get one - there's too much choice!

The on your front, facing inwards position is definitely the most comfortable for you, so whether he is growing out of it or not, that's probably why you are finding the other positions are not working.

When DS was between 6-9 months I used to put him on my front, facing in, but tuck one arm in and one arm out and he would sort of look out sideways. He was still on my front but I found it quite a good compromise when he was wanting to look around more. You have to alternate which arm is out because they tend to gravitate around to one side a bit doing this, but it's still a lot more supportive than a hip carry.
