Sling for newborn - Connecta or Moby ?

Hi, I'm new to babywearing and finding that I really want to wear DS2 who is 3 days old...

A friend recommends the stretchy wrap slings, particularly the Moby and I do like the look of them. However I can see myself using the Connecta, particulraly on the back, when DS2 is a lot older, and TBH I love the patterns ! I understand they do a newborn insert, so not as secure as a Moby but I think DP would use a Connecta. DS2 is a big baby at nearly 10lbs. What does everyone think ? Would he be secure enough ? I'd appreciate any ideas !

I don't like the stretchy wrap slings myself. Is the Connecta a Mei Tai?

Not tried a Connecta but I loved my Moby though it was a bit like baby origami. Then I got a Papoozle (Tots Bots do them). It is similar to a Moby but has a waistband so not origami. Haven't really used the Moby since.

yes but with clips instead of ties... so presumably easier to put on ? My friend loves hers, but she also loves her Kari-me ! confusing...

Oh, like the ergo. I have an ergo and love it but I wouldn't use it with a newborn - I did try it with ds and it just didn't work for me: fiddly to put baby in and out and just a lot to be wearing to carry a really tiny one.

I personally like a simple ring sling best for the very first few months, and when he gets a bit heavy for that a Mei Tai or something like the Connecta. That's what I'm planning for ds2 when he's born (because I really want a mei tai, which is possibly the only kind of sling I don't already have ).

Huggababy or padded Freedom Sling.

Ring slings are so adjustable they are great for the support a newborn needs and then can be altered to suit your baby as they grow. You can get them for a good price on ebay.

Ring slings are great for discreet boobing in too, it's easy to shuffle them about a bit and feed them as you wander around Tesco etc.

i would say moby, every time. love them.
used to belong to a very sling-y forum and if you asked the same question there you'd get about 50 people all saying the same lol

Am hesitating about ring slings, because I get dreadful upper back ache & I'm a bit reluctant to go for anything thatputs the weight of a heavy baby on one shoulder... or am I completely wrong in thinking that ?

Like the idea of bfeeding on the go, with a toddler and a dog...

If you have it on properly a ring sling distributed the weight evenly accross and down your back and through your pelvis, I have a scoliosis and a prolapsed disk but I can still carry my 3 year old for quite a long time in my huggababy.

Is there a baby cafe near you, you may find mums with slings there that you can have a nose at or even try out. If all else fails try slingmeet!

I like ring slings for shortish periods. BUT! A friend sent me a Kangaroo Korner fllece pouch and it is A-mazing - not a ring sling it poppers on but it fits the same way. It is sooooooo light and cosy and snuggley - I carry it everywhere just in case DS2 (three years old) falls asleep and needs the buggy so I have to carry DS3 (eight months). And it doubles up as a blanket!

Otherwise, I really recommend a Papoozle - easier to put on than a Moby and seriously comfy.

I loved my Coorie fleece pouch when my dd3 was tiny ( www.brightsparkslings.co.uk, it's so easy to pop over your head, just like a sash and your baby lies in it cradle style, my daughter loved it and was always fast asleep within minutes of putting her in it.

I also have a Connecta which I absolutely love, I've got two actually, the bottom can be rolled over to shorten the body so you wouldn't need a special newborn insert. HTH

Argh ! I'm still deliberating. However it turns out that our local toy library loans out Mobys and Kari-me wraps, so I'm on the waiting list for one.

Maybe I will just buy a Connecta anyway - if DS2 is anything like DS1 he will grow at the rate of knots and be in it in no time and in the meantime use a wrap on loan.

They hold their resale value really well though, don't they ?

This website www.petitpoppet.co.uk/ loans out slings for a fairly low fee that they donate to SANDS. If you wanted to try out the Connecta and can't find a sling meet or library that loans it out, you could try them? They have the Moby too if you can't wait. There's a pretty limited range at the moment, but a friend of a friend set up the site and I think it's just opened (hope that isn't unauthorised advertising. Have no connection to the site myself, I promise!).

I have a Connecta and my daughter is six months' old. I got it when she was about three months and she has always been big but, to be honest, I only found it good from a couple of weeks ago. My daughter has always been very active and hated the Connecta (unless she was asleep) until she was big enough to look out over the top. We have a Close too, which she much preferred because we could poke her head out when awake and tuck her in when she fell asleep, much as you could with a Moby. A friend has a Kari-me and loves it.

Sorry. That possibly adds to the confusion!

I have a Moby and a Connecta. I don't get on with the Moby at all but am planning to try it again soon. I love the Connecta and have used it practically every day since she was about a week old- she's nearly 10 weeks now.
