So, I'm due in November and have found my local sling library. Is it better to go whilst I'm pregnant and have a try out (so long as bump doesn't get in the way as I cannot get there until the end of July due to holiday), or should I wait until the baby is here and try out various loaner ones?

I'd prefer to have one ready so I can babywear from the start but then the other side of me says to wait and see how I am with baby as it'll probably only be a couple of weeks anyway.

Thoughts?

I would go and try some out, then buy one that you liked second hand before baby is due. When baby is here you can always get another if the one you chose doesn't suit. Both DP and I have baby K'tan slings, but dd is too chunky for mine now at 9 months, I should have got a bigger size I think, it was perfect when she was newborn though.

Personally I'd wait. We got one pre birth that was so unsuitable and ended up spending money on a new one post birth. You could loan one for the newborn phase then buy one which fits and suits your needs.

I had a Baby K'tan sling and the ByKay sling. I liked them both but it's such a personal thing, that I would wait and try it on after you've had your baby.

So what have you chosen to do GingerHanna?

I would suggest to wait until the baby comes as you would not know the correct size until then. It would be a waste of money if it doesn't fit. You can save the money and add some more and get a really great one once your baby is born.Flowers

I bought a stretchy wrap before DC1 was born and it used it from week 1, it was great. A lot of people will recommend stretchies for the first few months of wearing, they don't break the bank and "sizing" isn't really an issue as it's just a very long piece of fabric. DH and I could both wear it comfortably, and our baby practically lived in it for the first 5 months. When baby starts to get heavier and stronger, I would hit the sling library to see what sort of thing you want next, if you want to continue carrying into toddlerhood.

I'm due DC2 in October and will be bringing the stretchy to the hospital with me!
