When is the earliest you can use Ergo with insert?

I'd love some advice, please.

Back story: my 9 week old DC3 is a lovely chubby 14.3 lbs/ 6.5kg, 98th percentile, and we've both loved our ring sling (after the baby bjorn with DC 1 & 2), but she's really getting a bit heavy for it!

I have a second hand Ergo, without the insert. I know the official advice is that the Ergo can be used from 4 months - but is this based on developmental landmarks or size? DC3 is in 3-6 month old clothes already...

I've toyed with buying a Moby-type wrap, but I'd rather not spend any more money if I don't have to...

Thank you!

I used the ergo with the insert from birth, without from about 4 months I think. I thought it had more to do with development than size (latest DS was also a chunk from the start but without the insert the legs are in the wrong position I think).

Could you buy an insert? They are about £20 or less second hand. I have used my ergo on my 2 and a half year old so you get your moneys worth out of them.

It is a combination of size and development (so how well she can hold her head / upper body unaided etc. To be honest I'd say she's still too young.

my DD had really great head control (had her in baby bjorn facing in from birth 8lb5 and was fine) - then tried her in ergo when she was a bit bigger - the limiting factor for her - wasn't head control, but legs - ie her legs didn't comfortably straddle my body until around 6 months.

the insert can be uded from smaller i believe (but i didn't have one - may get one for number 2 :-) )
