I posted a wee while ago asking about the merits of the gemini vs butterfly vs manduca. Plan was to check out local sling meet and library but both only have the manduca. Have now also heard good things about the connecta and rose and rebellion... Does anyone know of any places that hire out any of these slings, perhaps giving you a discount if you go on to buy from them?

Go to Slumber Roo. They have exactly this service. I used it last year to test the Beco Butterfly II for 2 weeks and got a 10% discount when I went on to buy.

I also have a Connecta which I bought ages before. I switch between them depending on what I'm doing.

Ooh,hadn't heard of them:thanks. What do you use your slings for? Ie which is best for what?

My son is a big 17 month old. The Connecta has a bigger expanse of material and is great for just chucking him on my front if I'm diving in and out of shops etc. It doesn't have a padded waist bit though so not as supportive for the wearer in the long run, having said that, its very comfy and my husband happily uses it.

The reason I got the Beco is i'm a klutz who can't get my child on my back by myself. The Beco has the inner harness which makes it easy, though a bit time consuming. It has a much narrower body but has the padded waist which means I can gaily stomp for miles/hours with him on my back in relative comfort.

If it were possible I would combine the size of the connecta with the harness and waist of the beco. The Connecta is more comfy out of the two.

Thanks that's really helpful. DD is a small 5 month old so wonder whether to get one for short term and something different when she gets bigger.

I would say get what you need now. They have an excellent resale value when the time comes to change. Most carriers you mentioned will do you for months yet, maybe a couple of years, but only you know what's suits you and your child.
