Starting Slimming World today

Hi,
I hope it's okay to start a new thread here. I have followed Slimming World in the past, but in the past year have put on 2 stone, so I'm going to start again and try to lose the 2 stone and maybe even get to my ideal weight by losing another 7 lbs. That would put me at 10 stone and I'm 5 foot 7 - if I weigh less than 10 stone I look gaunt in the face.

I've got the books from last time and I don't like attending the meetings, I'll see how I get on, might join online if I think I need to.

Today I've had 2 slices of rye bread with a little butter and cheddar for breakfast (as my healthy A and B), a baked potato with a little grated cheddar and butter for lunch and dinner will be one sausage with a pile of mashed swede and some brussel sprouts. I had a snack this afternoon of an orange Club biscuit and 8 grapes. I might also have a ryvita - I need to get to grips with counting syns, as I can't remember how many syns things have so will have to look them up.

I'm going to try not to eat after 7 p.m (we have our evening meal when dh gets in at 6.30).

I've also done 15 minutes of exercise dvd (breaking myself in gently!) and walked the dog for half an hour.

Starting class tomorrow so shoving as much in as I can today Grin

2fat4that · 01/04/2015 21:19

Today I had 2 poached eggs on rye toast with baked beans for breakfast, for lunch baked potato with cheese, free snacks was a mug shot, dinner was Boston beans (mince and onion fried, stock added, then baked beans and Cayenne pepper, served with potatoes. I add grated cheese at the end and stir it in, but I had mine without. It's a huge favourite in our house Smile

Feeling snacky this evening, I've had a tiny Kinder choc bar and a small bag of popcorn, an alpen light Bar and some grapes. Blush

Today I've had the usual for breakfast and lunch - very boring, I know, but I like it and it includes no syns!

Breakfast: poached eggs on rye bread toast with baked beans
Lunch: baked potato with cheddar

Dinner will be ham and boiled egg with new potatoes and veg of some sort.

We have friends staying Saturday and Sunday and Sunday is also dd's birthday, so not sure how well I'm going to do ... I've ordered a super birthday cake for the first time ever, so really want to try a piece. Also fish and chips planned for Saturday teatime ... Blush

So dinner was ham, boiled egg, new potatoes, peas and broccoli.

Tonight I've been to a dance class and had a Bacardi and diet coke afterwards Smile Since coming home I've also had a small bag of popcorn and a tiny bar of kinder chocolate.

Well done 2Fab and Blondes, a downward trend is always good.

I had another loss this week, despite a big lunch at a friend's house on Good Friday and dinner out at Polpo (Italian) last night.

I'm still not 100% convinced by SW. I can't get my head round the low fat/ high carb thing. It feels counter intuitive. Pasta, rice, bread and potatoes all make me feel really bloated and bleugh.

I've been doing my own thing, eating mainly veg, salads, lean protein and some healthy fats. Not really counting syns, just using common sense. I'm trying to avoid all processed foods and am counting calories as well, to an extent, as I am using My Fitness Pal to log progress with exercise. I'm doing lots of walking - I did 7km yesterday and today, aiming for 5km a day in general by walking home from work from Wednesday. I start a new job and will be able to work home most of the way along the South Bank (London) which is a really nice walk.

I WILL be a size 14 by July. I bloody will!

I started as a size 18/20 weighting 111kg Sad Blush Angry.

2 weeks alter I am 104.9kg

I went through all my clothes yesterday and realised I have so many nice things to wear, once they fit me!

I'm sorry that this post has been negative about SW, I know it works for loads of people.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/04/2015 18:25

It's not negative. Years ago I did ww and lost 4 stone. My friend did sw and rem pointing her food for a few days and was in the 50's

I don't understand how sw works when you eat as much as you want of all carbs apart from bread

MisForMumNotMaid · 06/04/2015 19:32

It boils down to calories at the end of the day. A women at 25BMI on average has a calorie need of about 2000.

100g (dryweight) pasta is around 350 calories. A portion is said to be 50g- (not in this house).

The sauce you have with your pasta is going to be low calorie because its either veg based or very lean meat based and so again not that high calorie. 1/3 plate is beg/ salad so that reduces the amount of pasta/ sauce you heap on and you're unlikely to end up with a highly calorific meal.

If you end up full after each meal you're less likely to pick. Less likely to think well I didn't have lunch so I can eat the kids crusts, pinch a biscuit, munch a bag of crisps, have an icecream because I've saved all those calories. Where as a big bowl of pasta with a tomato/ garlic/ herb sauce is probably fewer calories than an icecream with flake from the icecream van.

I did a little bit of weightwatchers of the back of my sisters membership a few years ago and found that her version was a bit too open to points interpretation. We went to a country fair and had tea and cake. It was the biggest slice of rich home baked cake I've ever been served. My sis looked up cake and allocated points for a slice (it was a good three slices not one). Needless to say with such open interpretation of points weight loss was not brilliant. No doubt some find the same with syns.

Regarding bloating I thought I did with pasta, rice all carbs really. I don't when they're not combined with fat. I have had a few pasta/ pizza type meals out lately and been very bloated (also eaten too much) so I'm concluding that for me its when I combine with fat. But bread deffinately is the devils food.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 06/04/2015 23:40

That's interesting re fat and carbs together causing bloating. I attended an eating disorder support group years ago and the counsellors advocated "food combining", the essential message of which was don't mix carbs and protein. I know that the worst foods for me are pizza, pasta with meat sauces and curry with rice. All of which I fucking love! It's so unfaaaaaaaiiiirrrr!

LondonHuffyPuffy · 06/04/2015 23:44

Eating disorder group isn't really the right description. It was mainly attended by over eaters, which I guess is an eating disorder of sorts. The group counselling side of it was good, there was no weigh in and the advice was pragmatic and helpful. I wish I still had the literature from the programme.

MisForMumNotMaid · 07/04/2015 07:32

Oh now thats interesting. I mainly eat veg curry and my favorite pasta sauces are arribiatta and tomato, garlic and herb. So i do have low protein with my carbs. The meals I've eaten out have been meat sauces.

I may have to do some protein carb experiments to see if its actually the protein carb combination.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/04/2015 07:36

A basic meal is carbs and protein Tho

Spaghetti Bol
Shepherds pie
Fish pie
Lasagne
Chixken casserole with mash
Chilli con carne
Roast dinner
Curry and rice
Sausage mash and beans

All are meat/fish ie protein with then carbs - rice pots pasta

MisForMumNotMaid · 07/04/2015 07:50

Very true. I don't feel bloaty with everything. I thought it was a bread and pasta possibly rice thing. But since slimming world pasta isn't an issue. Bread is restricted so is no longer an issue.

Steak, chips and salad fortunately doesn't cause me an issue neither do things like cottage pie.

obrigada · 07/04/2015 10:10

2fat4that · 07/04/2015 21:10

Breakfast, packed egg and baked beans on rye bread
Lunch, baked potato with cheese
Dinner, ham and egg with mashed swede and broccoli
Syns, Alpen Light bar, tsp butter, dash of milk, small bag of popcorn

Hi, firstly well done everyone. SW definately seems to be the way forward. I have a quick question for you all, although the syns on line and syns calculator work for some things, I have just eaten, what I think is a healthy 'balanced for you' lunch from m and s. The king prawn, hot smoked Scottish lochmuir salmon and couscous salad WITHOUT the dressing. I have read all the info and put it into the syns calculator, but it is coming up 77 syns!!!! I guess is because they include the nutritional value of the dressing as well. The only ingredient, not free, from what I can see is pumpkin seeds, of which there were 3! Does anyone know if I can find out how many syns without having had the dressing, or just no way of knowing? Thank you.
