What should I do? 16 mo 'sleep problem' and doing things 'wrong'

COuld I please get some opinions? I am at the moment so unsure what to do and scared if I don't do anything it will get worse. My lo slept through from about 7 weeks until he turned 8 months. Then he started teething. And so for the last 7 months he stopped sleeping through, sometimes he will be awake for a short time at night, sometimes it gets better for a week or so and he sleeps through, but mostly he will wake at night. Sometimes he will be awake for 2 hours at a time. We moved him to a big bed from around 7 months and since then we've started lying with him when he wakes up. Initially he went to sleep independently, but for about the past two months we've been lying with him until he's asleep - somthing that we love doing, to be honest.
But his sleeping seem to be getting worse, and even if we're with him, he will sometimes just not sleep. I went back to work full time and obviously that made it so much harder. I know that we are doing so many things 'wrong' and my dh and I feel that the time has come for sleep training. But in my heart I am so reluctant to do this, tbh, but I feel if we don't do something now it will only continue to get worse? Is there anybody whose baby started sleeping through, despite you as parents doing all these 'wrong' things?
