Forgotten useful comfort habit! Help!

My son woke up a lot at night til 12 months old when I stopped Bfeeding him at night. He then would wake a cry for a few minutes for the next month but MIRACULOUSLY discovered the joy of sucking the back of his hand at 13 months - since when he would suck it for comfort all the time. Very useful indeed - no tantrums as can self comfort, okay with me going to work, went VERY happily into his bed etc...

Last week he had hand, foot, mouth disease and got terrible sores on his tongue and had to stop hand sucking.... poor boy. His sleep regressed A LOT. But now is back to sleeping at night - however, he cries for me at bedtime which I find very difficult and heart rending... he no longer has the comfort of his hand...

Just wondering if any wise mums think there is a chance he may find that lovely hand to suck again or if it's lost? (I had been wishing for thumb sucking for so long but got a back hand sucker at 13 months - quite odd).....

What does anyone think?
