2 yr old screaming at bedtime

Hi all,

my DS has (luckily) always been a good sleeper and for the last year has settled easily at bedtime. We have a strong bedtime routine, with bath, bottle, teeth, story, cuddle and lights out. Until last week, he'd go off to sleep no problem. However, on Sunday, he was fine until the lights out part - when he started screaming and holding on to me as if his life depended on it. Never had anything similar happen before, so didn't know how to deal with it. The only thing that kept him calm was to sit next to his cot until he'd gone to sleep.

We've then had repeat performances every night since. He's a little better now - as in he'll let me out of the room, provided the door is open, the hall light on and he can hear me talking/doing things.

I have no idea what sparked this off, nor do I know what to do about it. If he wakes in the night he won't settle by himself now, either.

Any hints or suggestions very welcome, please!!
