How long are babies of this age supposed to be awake for in a 24 hour period? Would be grateful for peoples experience.... thanks!

have a look here www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/sleep/sleepneeded/ for useful info

meant to say that my DS has always slept less than the guidelines say but he's happy when he's awake so I don't worry too much about it now.

Thanks for that. I'm sure my baby is asleep a lot more than those guidelines. Today he has barely stayed awake after feeding before dropping back off again. On the few occasions he's been awake for a bit, he's been alert and smiley though. 1st time mum and getting a bit worried

As long as he's alert when he's awake and does proper loud cries on occasion he's probably fine. I'm sure your HV or GP could check him over for you if you're worried.

How has he been since Tues?

some tiny babies sleep as much as 18 hours in a 24 hour period (never at night though )

As long as he's feeding properly and, like yankbaby says, is alert and happy when awake, then he's most likely fine.

Get him checked out (I'd personally go to the GP rather than the HV in my clinic!!) and then you won't worry anymore and enjoy the peace!

Thankyou, he's been a bit more awake since tues. He thrashes about ALL night in his sleep with trapped wind, so I wonder if that tires him out a bit more than average... have a follow up gp appointment for him today so will mention it to her.

Thanks again x

lol! Be glad for a sleepy baby! According to this article awake time should be about 45 minutes at 8 weeks.

But my view is... it all depends on the baby and they haven't read the manuals! lol!
