I woke up this morning without my DS1 (he's 4wks) crying which was odd as it was 7am and he usually wakes at 5.30-6. Went into his nursery to find he'd wriggled out of his blanket and managed to throw it over his head and face. Cue heart leaping into mouth and snatching blanket off his face. Result - one screaming baby as he'd been fast asleep and one mum who had to stand still until her heart rate returned to normal.
We're finding it quite tough in the hot weather to find what to swaddle him in. He can't sleep unless he's swaddled but the other day we resorted to wrapping him in a pillowcase.

Any suggestions on how to stop him trying to smother himself and what to swaddle him in? How long do babies need to be swaddled?
He's our first child and we are a little clueless.

swaddle as long as he is jerky - in muslin when it's hot

you can swaddle him in a sheet. or carry on using a pillowcase if that works

as an aside... do you have blackout blinds/curtains? he may have slept better with the blanket over his head as it cut the light out?

we have a lightweight swaddle wrap made by the Gro company which has been okay even the last few nights...its like a t-shirt fabric but you can get oversize muslin squares specifically for swaddling from a company called Big Muz.

Thanks for the replies. He slept well last night as it was cooler. I, on the other hand, kept getting up to check he was ok.
We do have blackout blinds and curtains, think he only got the blanket over his head by accident as he likes sleeping with his arms by his head.

Will definitely check out those oversize muslin squares!

Cheers.

You can also get big muslin swaddles from Aden & Anais....

Good luck!
