soooo tired, will Medised help a cough at night?

Ds is 1 and has the most horrid cold and cough. Its really frustrating because there is nothing I feel I can do for him during the night when he coughs for hours on end. I have tilted cot, given drinks, breastfed given calpol, humidified room etc etc. Have been told by friend that Medised may help to suppress his cough a bit. I know the new guidelines are not to give at his age but on bottle it still says can use at 3+ months. Does anyone have any advice on whether this may help?? Even a little?? Desperate now as just come back to work and finding it difficult to function on 2 hours sleep!!

Pah, I'd try Medised too. Following instrux on the box. Just be very careful you don't mix it with anything else (especially not paracetamol or antihistamines). The fear of overdose due to people not realising what was in it is the main reason it's advised against.

bah, these coughs, you have my sympathy. It runs you ragged, and is so hard when yuo can't help them.

Medised may help hims leep better, than the normal paracetamol. Might be that you have to let it run it's course tho. Have you had his chest checked out for infection?
I know they normally say 'ok it's a virus, goodbye' but it may be worth it if it continues much longer.

Iknow how rubbish it is. Dd is 8 and whenshe gets 'the' cough she has it for weeks.

dd was also prescribed with an inhaler at 2 for night time coughing/asthma.

Medised sends my DC hyper. If you're going to try it be prepared for the possibility. Sorry and I hope hes better soon.

Have you had him checked by the doctor?

It's worth it, my DS has a cough which is really bad at night and no other symptoms, took him to docs on Monday who sent us to hospital for xray and he has pneumonia in his right lung. Must be prone to pneumonia as he had it really bad in October and needed surgery to drain his lung but this time has got it mild and only got a cough with it.

Really not trying to frighten you as am sure it won't be that but just wanted to say its worth getting it checked out.

Sympathies - ds had this last week and I was so tired and grumpy.

I took hom to the docs even though I thought it would be a total waste of time and turned out he did have a chest infection. After a few days on amoxycillin, we were all sleeping again. Get him looked at.

medised did used to help dd sleep when she was poorly, although it was a bugger to get down her as it tastes like crap. haven't used it for years though due to the bad press.

Bumperlicious · 24/03/2010 15:08

Just FYI medised is now 'not allowed' (or not sold) for children under six (speaks bitterly from experience).

It's crap when they keep themselves up all night though.

Thanks so much for replies. He has just finished a course of antibiotics so was hoping that would dotrick. Feel so sorry for him (and me!). Seems to be getting better as better in day but is just night time when the cough strikes. May give medised or calpol night a go if can get it and trip to drs again if no better soon. Thanks again for your support!
